Xcel, Tri-State to partner on $180M Colorado transmission line - Denver Business Journal:

The project, backed by Westminster’s Tri-State and Minneapolis-based Xcel, woulr build a transmission line from the San Luis Valletin south-central Colorado to Walsenburg and north to Applications for approval by the were filed Thursday. The goal is to strengthenh the state’s power grid, serve increasing demane for electricity and offer transmission accessfor new, renewable powerd sources, the companies said in a jointf statement. The project has been dubbed the “Sa Luis Valley-Calumet-Comanche Transmission Project.” Xcel is Colorado’s largesy power and natural gas provider, serving about 70 percentr of the state’s population.
“Tri-State and Xcel Energg are building needed transmission infrastructure to servthe state’s long-term needs and supportg the goals of the New Energy Economy,” said Joel Tri-State’s senior vice president of transmission, in a “This project is a great examplr of our coordinated efforts to ensure reliabl e power delivery throughout the region.” Xcel’ds Kent Larson, vice president for transmission and operating said in a statement that the two utilities “are combining our resourceds and assets to put forward a strong plan that addressexs load growth and supporte future renewable energy development.
” The PUC must issu e a ruling that the new transmission line is needefd before construction can begin. The utilities also need land use approvalsx from local governments alongthe line’s path.
