The Pullman-based university released a preliminary budget plan on May 1 afte r the state Legislature announced an operating budget that include d significant cuts tohigher education. Wednesday’s announcement reflects the resultsz of public budget forums and meetings heldsincee then. The new budget goes into effect onJuly 1. Job reductions include 167 vacanr positions and 116 currently filled Another 47 people will take early retirement while others have shifter from full time to part WSU employs morethan 6,200 people acrossz the state.
The three programs that will be cut are the Departmenty of Theaterand Dance, the Department of Communit and Rural Sociology and the major in Students who are majoring in those fields will still be able to take coursesa to finish their degrees, but no new students will be President Elson Floyd, Provost Warwick deans, chancellors and vice presidents are contributinhg 5 percent of their base salaries, or a total of about $330,000, to a speciap fund that has allowed WSU to save some More detailed information on the budget reduction s
